INAUGURAL GENERAL MEETING AGENDA (minutes at end) Saturday 29th September 2007
Thomas Hardye School, Sixth Form Centre, Coburg Road, Dorchester (by kind permission of the Headmaster).
1.00pm Tea and coffee and opportunity to view displays of some of the historical work going on around the county, these will include: Abbotsbury Heritage Research Project Blandford Museum Bridport Museum Cerne Abbas Historical Society Christchurch Local History Society Dorset County Boundary Survey Sherborne Museum West Dorset Research Centre
2.00pm Inaugural General Meeting
AGENDA 1. Welcome by Katherine Barker, Chairman of the Steering Committee.
2. Apologies for absence.
3. Introduction by Hugh Jaques, Dorset County Archivist, finishing with the proposal “that a Dorset History Forum be formed, and that the constitution, as presented by the Steering Committee, be accepted”.
4. Election of Chairman, followed by new Chairman’s address. The Steering Committee put forward the following nomination: Katherine Barker (Sherborne).
5. Election of the Officers of the Forum (Vice-Chairman, Secretary, Minutes Secretary, and Treasurer). The Steering Committee put forward the following nominations: Lilian Ladle (Wareham) as Vice-Chairman; John Brown (Weymouth) as Secretary; Ann Smith (Dorchester) as Minutes Secretary; Phil Roberts (West Lulworth) as Treasurer.
6. Election of up to seven Committee Members. The Steering Committee put forward the following six nominations: Hayley Caves (Portland); Jane Ferentzi-Sheppard (Bridport); Sylvia Hixson (Blandford); Michael Hodges (Christchurch); Ian Messer (Christchurch); Judy Nash (Sherborne).
7. Approval of subscriptions.
8. Any other business appropriate to the business of an Inaugural General Meeting.
3.00pm Speaker - John Chandler - former Wiltshire County Local Studies Librarian now freelance local historian and publisher via his own publishing company Hobnob Press.
In 1993 John published a new edition of 'John Leland's Itinerary, Travels in Tudor England' including a new introduction, maps and illustrations. This is a unique eye-witness account of England in the 1530s here John will concentrate on Leland's account of his travels in Dorset.

Inaugural General Meeting

1. Katherine Barker, the Chairman of the Steering Group welcomed delegates to the meeting.
2. Apologies: David Clammer, Trudi Cole (Weymouth and Portland Council Community Development Officer), Jane Ferentzi-Sheppard, Sylvia Hixson (Blandford Museum), Jacqueline Hutchings, Kay Kersey (Stinsford & Bockhampton Local History Society), Lilian Ladle, Judy Nash (Sherborne Museum), Caryl Parsons (Bradford Abbas History Society), Chris Widdowson (Poole Harbour Heritage Project).
3. Proposal: After a short introduction Hugh Jaques, County Archivist, proposed ‘that a Dorset History Forum be formed, and that the constitution, as presented by the Steering Committee, be accepted’. This was seconded by Michael Hodges and carried by a vote of the whole meeting, nem con.
4. Election of Chairman: Hugh Jacques proposed Katherine Barker, seconded by Phil Roberts, carried by a vote of the whole meeting, nem con. The new Chairman thanked the meeting, and gave a short address.
5. Election of Officers: The Steering Group put forward, and the Chairman proposed, Lilian Ladle as Vice-Chairman, John Brown as Secretary, Ann Smith as Minutes Secretary, and Phil Roberts as Treasurer. The election of the above was seconded by Michael le Bas and carried by a vote of the whole meeting, nem con.
6. Election of Committee members: The Steering Group put forward, and the Chairman proposed, Hayley Caves, Jane Ferentzi-Sheppard, Sylvia Hixson, Michael Hodges, Ian Messer, and Judy Nash. The election of the above was seconded by Penny Copeland-Griffiths and carried by a vote of the whole meeting, nem con.
7. Subscriptions: The Treasurer proposed an annual subscription of £15 for a society, and £6 for an individual. This should cover projected expenses. In answer to a question from the floor, he agreed that the Committee was mindful that smaller societies with few members might struggle to pay £15, and this would be reviewed at a later meeting. The approval of the subscription rates as above was proposed by the Chairman, seconded by Peter Andrews, and carried by a vote of the whole meeting, nem con.
8. A.O.B. In answer to a question from the floor, it was agreed that exchange of information would be of prime importance. The Dorset History Forum intends to publish a Newsletter, is setting up a web-site, and will hold events, including perhaps a History Fair. All of these will be dependent for their success upon the input of members, and contributions and suggestions will be encouraged.
